Care & Maintenance
Tail - General Care
You can use rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle and mist over to help deodorize and disinfect. Be sure to do this after every use.
Cleaning
Some tails will have a maintenance zipper, usually located around the tail base or on the outside of the tail either on the side or underside hidden in the fur (along a seam or color change). Unzip and remove all the stuffing first before cleaning. If the stuffing needs washed you can use a pillow case (using safety pins to keep closed) or a zippered washing mesh bag and place in a washing machine.
If the tail has a zippered pocket check and make sure that there is nothing stored inside.
Removable Electronics
- For tails with removable electronics you first need to remove all electronic components as well as the wiring, through the maintenance zipper. Also make sure to remove any batteries.
Detergents
- Since we will be cleaning with cold water, I recommend only using a half tablespoon of liquid detergent, not powder detergent. if you only have the option of a powder detergent, scoop about half tablespoon of powder into a bowl and mix with warm water first before adding to the washer or tub. If you add too much detergent the fur will have a slick to slime like feel to it after it's dried (which can be remedied by re-washing without any detergent added). Only recommendation on the type of detergent to use would be one that's non-scented.
Spot Cleaning
- You can use a carpet cleaner spray like Folex, spraying over the spot you want cleaned and using your fingers to work into the fur or a comb, breaking up the dirt. Then using a rag or paper towel, press down on the area to absorb the moisture. You can also spray some water over the area to help lift any remaining dirt. Once you are finished use a fan to help dry out the fur and brush.
Rag Wash
- You can use a wet rag with a little detergent and softly press/rub over the fur. Use another wet rag to rinse away the soap, pressing into. To help dry you can then pad it down with a dry rag and place the tail in front of a fan, rotating around.
Washing Machine Usage
- Make sure it is set to cold only and on gentle cycle with spin dry.
Tub / Sink Washing
- Use cold to slightly warm water (so it's easier on your hands to work with, but do not use all hot water). Add in a small amount of liquid detergent and mix around with your hands. Now place in the tail and use your hands to lightly rub and scrub. Once you are done drain the soapy water and rinse the tail thoroughly, squeezing out excess water. You can use a towel and roll the tail inside, squeezing out more to help with the drying process.
Hang to Dry
- Now hang up the tail on a hanger or rack, preferred over a tub or towels to collect the dripping water and place a fan directed towards the tail (do not place directly under it). Allow a few hours to dry off, going in every so often to brush the fur. Make sure the tail is fully dry before storing, you do not want any dampness to the fur.
